Seafoam Media's Summer Reading List (Part 2)

How to Win Friends and Influence People

In our last blog post we looked at some of the Seafoam Media team's favorite business books. Our summer reading list continues with another batch of amazing reads from the rest of the team. These books are a little bit broader in nature, and aren't specific to just the world of business. The rest of the Seafoam Media team pulled together a list of books that have helped shape the way they think, both personally and professionally. Take a look at the continuation of the Seafoam Media summer reading list for another round of amazing reads.

As one of our web developers, Jennifer Gardiner spends her days elbow deep in code. Her favorite book should be no surprise. Most of the books that I read offer an escape for me. I love science fiction books because they help spark my imagination for what is possible, which, as a web developer, is just about anything you can imagine (if it happens online.) One book that speaks to me is a science fiction book by William Hertling, "Avogadro Corp." The book is the first in a series and is about an email developer, David, whose project is in danger of being cancelled.  He installs a bit of code, a hidden directive, in an attempt to save his project. In doing so, he accidentally creates a bit of runaway artificial intelligence. I love this book for two reasons. Number one, it is a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. The second reason, this book speaks to me as a developer. I understand how a bit of code can have crazy consequences down the line. I am just grateful that none of my "bugs" have ever had such disastrous  consequences.

Erin Hindalong, "Strengths Finder" by Gallup

Our resident social media expert, Erin Hindalong, had no hesitation in choosing her favorite book. I really love the "Strengths Finder" book, based on the Gallup online assessment. I have used it several times in various situations, both personally and professionally to get a better understanding of personality types and how they affect the way we work together. So much of what I do professionally is about reaching out to very different personalities on a regular basis. I use this book to make sure that every time I sit down to write a blog or post on social media I have a clear idea of how our message will get heard, no matter what the message may be. On a personal level also helps me to understand my own strengths and weaknesses in order to grow professionally.

Marla Smith, as our newest addition to the team, drew on her experience in account management for her favorite book. The book that has helped me most professionally is an oldie but a goody, "How To Win Friends & Influence People," by Dale Carnegie. I recommend this book for anyone who works with people... which is almost everyone. It has helped me to better my communication skills in a myriad of ways. The most important lesson, I think, from the book offers ways to disagree without being disagreeable. We are not always going to be on the same page with out customers, and from time to time we need to work out some of these disagreements. This book has been invaluable in helping me to see other's point of view and learn to communicate my own point of view in a way that is productive and helpful for all. Seriously, you need to read this book.
